In recognition of his pioneering work in the invention, development, and commercial application of a bacterial cellulose membrane technology for biomedical applications, primarily as a biocompatible tissue replacement for various conditions. The uniqueness of his work led to four early journal publications, 10 US patents, and 20 international patents that were used as basis for products that have been used by tens of thousands of patients in the US, Canada, and EU over the past two decades.
With the desire to share his experience in the commercialization of research-based technologies in the Philippines, he has served as a high-level adviser to several organizations and major Philippine universities. He has also been involved in various initiatives to link government, industry, and academia, and has strengthened the Innovation Science and Technology Ecosystem in the Philippines.
